From Cluttered to Stylish: Twickenham Boot Room Redesign

Design Package: Room by Room | Service: Design & Project Management | Location: Twickenham

Let’s be honest, boot rooms rarely get the attention they deserve. They’re the first space we see when we walk through the door, but they’re often cluttered, cramped, and chaotic. That was the case in our client’s home until now.

We recently tackled a full redesign of a boot room in Twickenham and the transformation has completely changed the space. It’s now organised, practical, and stylish.

Here’s how we took this room from a clutter-prone space to an inviting and practical entryway.

The Brief

Our client’s old boot room was more of a dumping ground than a functional space. Coats were piled on a single overworked rail, shoes lined the walls (and the floor), and there was nowhere to sit while getting ready.

The space wasn’t huge, but we knew it had lots of potential—we just had to rethink how to best use it.

D&R Design

We approached the project with three priorities in mind:

  1. Functionality – Everything needed a designated place.

  2. Durability – Materials had to stand up to daily use, dirt, and wet gear.

  3. Aesthetic – It should feel like a natural extension of the home, not an afterthought.

Key Design Features

Here’s what went into the redesign:

Built-In Storage: We added custom-built-ins to maximise vertical space and hide clutter. Tall cabinets now store coats and off-season items, while drawers below house shoes and outdoor accessories.

Bench Seating: A built-in bench doubles as seating and storage. It’s perfect for pulling on boots, and underneath our client can keep everyday shoes.

Built-In Shelving with Baskets: Stylish Hidden Storage: One of our favourite design additions to the new boot room is the built-in open shelving paired with woven baskets. While we love the clean look of closed cabinets, these shelves strike the perfect balance between accessibility and style.

The baskets are used to store items that our clients need to keep on hand but don’t want on display—like reusable shopping bags, scarves and out-of-season hats. It keeps everything tidy and out of sight while still being easy to grab when needed.

Wall Hooks: Rather than relying on a single coat rack, we installed two sets of wall hooks: one above the bench for daily-use coats and jackets, and another on a dedicated “hook wall” to hold handbags, hats, and other frequently used accessories. This setup keeps everything visible, accessible, and off the floor—without feeling cluttered.

Colour Palette: We painted the cabinetry a deep green and kept the walls and other woodwork a complementary neutral to make the space feel open and clean.

Takeaway Tips for Your Own Boot Room Redesign

If you're considering a boot room update, here are a few things we recommend:

  • Design for your habits – Think about how you use the space day to day.

  • Closed storage is your best friend – Hide the mess without losing functionality.

  • Make it feel like home – Don’t be afraid to add paint, artwork, or textiles to make the room feel intentional.

  • Think vertical – Floor-to-ceiling solutions can double your usable space in a small room.
